Enmendó, tomó la decisión apropiada, en vez de ir a Santa María, muda su visita semanal al Ejido, a los domingos por la tarde, más tempranito.
Era en el Ascensor, donde más caña le metían con Pablo, forofo del Valencia, Alfonso el del estanco junto a su sobrino, del Athletic (Bilbao), Paco Armijo (Bulano) primo hermano de Florentino y Pedro Parra de nadie, pero deseando que llegase para darle la vara e hincar el diente donde más dolía, futbolísticamente hablando.
Llegaba el hombre como antes dije, acicalado, con su traje marrón, su chaleco, corbata a juego y sus gafas no negras, pero tan oscuras como las de Matrix, las de los malos. Era el único fan del Barcelona en ése sitio, o era masoquista o se presentaba allí con la misma intención que el resto, sacar la faca y repartir cisco.
Aparte del futbol e ir a misa fue cartero, que ya muchos jóvenes quisieran igualarle, pues las notificaciones las despachaba como si fuesen balas. Como su zapato cuando impactó en las botellas del bar de Ángeles la de la plaza, destrozando varias… ni siquiera queriendo, sino que un coche en la puerta de Carmen Nieto impactó con su pierna, el zapato voló… arrasando la barra.
Uno no sabe cuáles eran sus horas favoritas qué, conociéndolo, y poniendo las «cartas» sobre la mesa, cualquier hora era buena…:
Cuando bajaba por la calle Joaquín Mercado, si Cristóbal Nieto no estaba ocupado,el cartero siempre tenía tiempo de pararse en lo de Ángeles con el barbero.
A mediodía en el Mancheguillo con Manolo Páez, Pedro Parra y Manolo “el del paro”,.
O por la tarde, cuando no tenía el hombre nada que hacer excepto visitar a sus amigos, y entre copa y copa a ver quién la soltaba más gorda. Pero, si alguno se pasaba, te miraba por encima de las gafas oscuras dejando ver su ojo “vago”, y con un ―¡Uhhhhh mamamía!― todo se acababa, las bromas terminaban.
O en las verbenas, fuera mayordomo o nadie, un simple vecino del jardín al que nunca molestaron los altos ruidos de Employers o de Chasis, qué cuando los pobres tiraban para Linares, él, con un saludo abierto y afectuoso los despedía para irse al Tayfa´s, para “hacer hora”, seguir la fiesta y ver temprano los toros.
Fue cartero, pero en muchos sitios cuando la necesidad lo requería, convertíase el hombre en notario, interventor, registrador o dueño absoluto del Condado. Siempre al beneficio de la causa, qué, quien lo acompañara, llevara o trajera, no pagaba ni un cubata, ni él siquiera.
Fue alguien con un desparpajo impresionante, avezado para mercarle una Mobilette a Angel Nieto, de venderle pan al panadero, quinielas al lotero y cruces de madera con clavos incluidos al Santísimo hijo de José el carpintero.
Muy bien se inspiró en él Serrat en una de sus canciones :
